NO BLADES! NO SHORTCUTS!
Do your own research: it makes a HUGE difference!
California Eye Center has been a frontrunner in providing outstanding visual outcomes, utilizing only the most advanced, state-of-the-art technology in vision corrective surgery.
The STAR VISX-S4 “flying-spot” excimer laser with Iris-Registration & Eye-tracking Technology is the platform of choice for the most advanced refractive practices around the country to date and is available at California Eye Center.
It has the most up-to-date “tracking” technology as well as “iris registration” which allows the laser to align itself with the patient’s eye during surgery to ensure accurate laser placement every single time.
This machine has one of the widest ranges of treatments approved by the FDA, and allows our surgeon to perform custom treatments on his near-sighted (up to -11 diopters!), far-sighted (up to +4 diopters), and astigmatic patients (up to 6 diopters of astigmatism!).
The VISX S4 is also approved to perform custom LASIK / PRK to treat presbyopia (poor “reading vision” due to age).
Conceptually, LASIK is a very simple surgical procedure that involves two steps: cutting and lifting a small contact lens-like flap from a thin superficial layer of the cornea (about 100-120um in thickness), followed by reshaping of the underlying corneal tissue to correct the refractive error (near-sightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism).
It is here where a computer generated “wavefront” map of your eye is programmed into the laser to provide a custom treatment of all of your eye’s visual imperfections. This custom treatment is intended to provide you with the best, most clear vision, without haloes, glare, or any other higher order aberrations that can also adversely affect your vision.
Needless to say, glasses and contacts do not correct such imperfections, so utilizing this technology, your vision can potentially be better than what you currently see with your glasses or contact lenses!
The following image best summarizes what happens during this quick & relatively painless procedure:
1. The Ziemer Femtosecond Laser utilizes millions of laser pulses to create a 9 to 9.5mm flap on the Cornea (in a matter of about 13 seconds per eye). This obviates the need for using a blade to do this.
2. Once lifted, the VISX S4 Flying Spot Laser will deliver the exact treatment parameters to the Cornea. This usually takes about 8 seconds per Diopter of treatment.
3. The flap is placed back in it’s place. That’s it!!
